Description:
Working with families where children suffer from a mental illness can be particularly challenging for the child welfare social worker. Bipolar can affect children on many levels-cognitively, behaviorally, environmentally, and socially. There is much controversy around children with bipolar due to the potential overlap with ADHD, depression, and conduct disorder. This workshop will focus on those challenges and provide you an opportunity to problem solve around those issues. We will focus specifically on children that suffer from bi-polar. This workshop will consist of lecture, small and large group discussion, and case planning.
Objectives:
Understand the symptoms and signs of juvenile bipolar disorder Differentiate between bipolar and other disorders it may resemble Understand the impact of bipolar on children (cognitively, behaviorally, environmentally, and socially). Understand the impact on the family when a child has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Discuss and evaluate several techniques that have had success with this population Demonstrate an understanding of the challenge by developing a creative case plan from your own caseload.
