Description:

This two part workshop will first examine what research has shown to be the affects of trauma on the developing brain and then apply this knowledge to the work of child welfare. This workshop will prepare social workers: to understand the effects of trauma on different developmental stages of growth; to identify traumatized children; have a better understanding of the environment children need in order to heal.  It will be theoretical and yet practical and applicable social work practice.

The second day of the training will use case studies to illustrate the behavioral disorders social workers often see in children and outline how social workers can help parents and foster parents cope with these behaviors and create environments that will help to re-program the brain into healthier thinking patterns.  Types of therapy that will help the most for seriously disturbed children will also be reviewed.

Objectives:

The overall goal of the workshop is to help social workers be more aware of what to look for when they see children in need and be better prepared to provide parents/foster parents/caregivers with appropriate information to help them handle difficult behaviors and help children heal.
